I don’t know where the time is going – just flying by this year. It’s hard to believe it’s already August…in fact the Hungry Ghost Period started just a few days ago and doesn’t end until the 12th of September.
This is the time of year when hungry ghosts and wandering spirits are released from “hell” to roam freely…making it a very dangerous time. Just imagine…the gates of the ghost realms are thrown open and the souls of the dead return now to visit their living relatives…and wandering spirits roam around the streets and neighbourhoods.
It’s during this time that we leave food offerings outside for hungry ghosts and dead relatives to enjoy…as well as making prosperity rituals like burning paper money, paper houses etc. Believe me, this brings great relief as well as material comfort to the spirits when they return to hell at the end of the month.
But perhaps more important are our prayers and the incense offerings that we make at this time. In this week’s ezine I’ve explained a little more about “hungry ghosts” for those of you who are new to this and I’ve given you all a powerful incense ritual to perform during the month – I hope you will use it.
Important Ghostly Reminders
This year the Hungry Ghost period started on August 14 and ends on September 12, 2015 in the 7th month of the Lunar Calendar. The actual day falls on 28th of August 2015. It is during this month that yin overpowers yang, and as such when yin chi dominates your space, wandering ghosts and spirits are attracted since they thrive in such an environment. Ghosts also like to convene in homes that are built over gravesites.
We Chinese believe that it’s important to take extra care during this month, especially at nighttime and to wear additional amulets for protection (they provide more yang energy) since hungry ghosts can cause harm to those whose chi energy is depleted or low. This is a month to wear bright colors and play music! During this period you’ll find Chinese temples offering prayers and feasts and putting on opera shows to distract these wandering spirits.
Here are a few things I want to remind you about this month:
- Avoid swimming – it’s believed that evil spirits that previously drowned are looking for souls to claim in exchange for a safe passage to rebirth.
- Children, teenagers, young adults should not venture out alone at night. Children are particularly susceptible to spirit possession.
- It’s advisable to wear amulets of protection containing the seed syllables of HUM or HRIH.
- No moving houses, or opening new businesses this month and avoid getting married at all costs!
- Avoid campsites; hiking and jungle ventures…ghosts love to inhabit these spots and chances of injury and spirit possession are very high.
- Drive with caution, no speeding and avoid accidents. Take your time.
- Keep your forehead clean and free of head cover and avoid placing your hands on your shoulders. It is said that everyone has three flames on the body; one on each shoulder and one on the forehead. Touching them is said to put out the flame and weaken your internal energies thus increasing the chances of spirit possession.
The best thing you can do is to appease with offerings of prayer and incense…so read on!
Make Powerful Incense Offerings And Prayers This Month
The best way to stay protected this month is to wear amulets and make regular incense offerings to appease the spirits. Offering incense to hungry ghosts, holy enlightened being and local spirits not only protects you but also creates good karma.
Invite this powerful Guru Rinpoche into your home and place him in a respectful place. Guru Rinpoche has the power to keep all spirits under control and ensure they do not cause mischief!
At World of Feng Shui you can find many types of incense and incense powders since different incense blends appeal to different deities and protectors; thus you can find special incense for different purposes and they are very effective and quick acting.
For example, there is special incense for illness, for prosperity and generating wealth luck, for improving relationships…and more. These are all of very high quality made of special herbs as well as the roots, bark and sap of trees. Some contain rather hard to find ingredients and so are a little more expensive. Be sure to visit WOFS Megamall for Green Tara incense for success, Medicine Buddha incense for health problems, Dzambhala Wealth Incense for prosperity and Manjushri Incense for examination luck and many more.
During Hungry Ghost Month please perform the following short incense ritual:
First Take Refuge:
I take refuge in the Buddhas and all the enlightened beings. I am making this incense offering to remove all obstacles and to appease all the hungry ghosts of the world this month.
Then say OM AH HUM three times and blow on the incense. Chant the mantra to the Buddha you are offering the incense to, then recite this special mantra 21 times. The following mantra comes directly from Shakyamuni Buddha and is contained in a special Sutra. The Buddha advises that this mantra will magnify the effects of the incense being offered.
Nama Sarva Tathagata Avalokite Om Sambhara Sambhara Hum (21 x)
Then you must think: “I am offering this delicious uncontaminated smoke offering to all the Buddhas (specific deity name), dakas, dakinis, dharmapala protectors, and oath bound protectors, yakshas, nagas, smell eaters, sentient beings of the six realms an entirety of regional deities and landlords of this house, this street, this suburb and this city and all the billions of hungry ghosts and wandering spirits of the world. Please accept this smoke offering. Please grant me all my wishes, grant my family long life and allow me to achieve all my aims as I envision them.”
Next chant the Heart Sutra text and say the Avalokiteshvara mantra 108 times.
Om Mani Padme Hum
At this time you can also chant the mantra of the Buddha you are directly requesting help from and also mention additional requests here.
Due to the merits accumulated by others, and myself may all beings have happiness and may the Bardo and the entire Lower realm be empty forever. Wherever there are Bohisattvas, may all their prayers be accomplished immediately.
Hungry Ghost Month is the best time to perform prayers to assist those who may be stuck in Bardo – to allow them to be liberated and enable them to be reborn again as humans. Ghosts are humans who have passed away and are trapped in the bardo state. Usually this happens due to a sudden or tragic death -car accidents, suicides, heart attacks etc.
Offer incense to all the enlightened beings of the universe, and to the local landlords within your home as well as the wandering spirits outside your home on the 1st, 8th, 10th, 15th, 19th, 25th and 29th day of the Hungry Ghost month. This will keep them appeased and ensure they do not harm you.

Cleaning Up for Good Feng Shui
Clean, washed clothes are always nice to put on – they make us feel good -and comfortable. Your home or office – the space you occupy is no different. All energy gets stale and can become dirty and polluted…so cleaning your space on a regular basis should be a housekeeping ritual you adopt. When you clean and purify your space…you’ll find living in your home to be much nicer.
We all feel overwhelmed sometimes…things just get too much! Sometimes it’s good to just let go – realize that you don’t have to be strong all the time. Releasing is sometimes the best way for you to cope with life’s pressures. Just let go…you don’t have to be determined, empowered and trying to achieve something all of the time.
